WHAT DRIVES THE PRICE
FIVE THINGS THAT MOVE THE COST

VOLUME OF MATERIAL USED
The biggest single driver. A 100cm³ part uses 10× the material of a 10cm³ part, all else equal. FDM uses variable infill (typically 15-30%) so doesn't fill the whole part with plastic; SLA prints solid.

TECHNOLOGY
FDM (filament) is the cheaper default — material costs ~£20-30/kg and prints can be partially hollow. SLA (resin) typically runs 2-3× FDM for the same volume because resin is ~£40-80/litre and parts must be printed solid. Resin printers cure a whole layer at once, so parts uploaded together share one build plate — you pay the plate's machine time, wash and cure once, plus a small per-part cost.

MATERIAL
Within FDM: PLA cheapest (~£15-25/kg), PETG slightly more (~£20-30/kg), ABS/ASA mid-range (~£25-35/kg), specialist materials (TPU, polycarbonate, carbon-fibre composites) up to £50-80/kg. Within SLA: standard grey resin cheapest, specialty resins (high-temp, tough, castable) 2-3× the price.

FINISH QUALITY (LAYER HEIGHT)
A finer layer height means more layers, longer print, higher cost. Standard FDM is 0.2mm layers; "high quality" 0.1mm doubles print time. SLA defaults to ~0.05mm and is finer regardless.

QUANTITY
Volume discounts kick in fast. 10 of the same part costs much less than 10 different parts because the printer runs flat and there's no setup overhead per part. Production runs (10-100+ parts) typically save 30-60% per part vs single orders.

SLA prices are higher because parts must print solid — no infill option. Pays off when surface finish or fine detail is the priority.

Bottom line: For one-off prototypes and small batches under ~20 parts, 3D printing is almost always cheaper than CNC. For metal parts or production runs over 100 units, CNC takes over.

Bottom line: 3D printing wins on small runs because there's no tooling cost. Injection moulding wins on volume because the per-part cost is far lower once the tool is paid off. Crossover point is typically 500-1,500 units depending on part complexity.
WATCH OUT FOR
HIDDEN COSTS
Setup / minimum order fees — many 3D printing services charge a minimum of £20-50 per order regardless of part size. (Bicester3D doesn't — orders start from £5.)
Post-processing charges — sanding, painting, coating, threaded inserts often added on. Check whether the quoted price is "off the printer" or "ready to use."
Material premiums — rare materials (high-temp resins, carbon-fibre filaments) can multiply the base price 3-5×. Get the material confirmed in writing before order.
Express turnaround surcharges — same-day or next-day jobs often carry a 30-50% premium with most UK suppliers.
VAT — UK VAT (20%) applies on most 3D printing services. Confirm whether quoted prices include or exclude.
