FREQUENTLY ASKED

JEWELLERY & CASTING 3D PRINTING FAQ

Can you print castable patterns for lost-wax casting?

Yes — we print Formlabs Castable Wax, a 20% wax-filled resin formulated for investment casting, available directly through our instant quote tool. It burns out cleanly with zero ash in standard burnout schedules, leaving a clean cavity for the metal pour, and Formlabs publishes a full datasheet with recommended burnout schedules you can pass to your caster. We work with independent jewellers, wedding-ring designers and small jewellery studios across the UK.

Do you print directly in metal?

No — we don't operate metal 3D printers. The standard jewellery workflow is: we print a castable resin pattern, you (or your caster) burn it out and pour metal into the cavity. If you need direct metal printing (DMLS, SLM) we can suggest UK partners we trust, but it's not a service we offer in-house.

What detail can you achieve for jewellery work?

0.05mm XY resolution on our Formlabs Form 4, with layer heights down to 0.025mm for the finest pattern detail. That's enough resolution to capture filigree, fine engraving, micro-pave settings and decorative geometry that survives the casting burn-out cleanly.

Do you work with independent jewellers and small studios?

Yes — a regular request. We print one-off engagement ring patterns, custom bridal commissions, signet patterns and decorative jewellery elements for independent jewellers and small studios across the UK. Trade pricing available for ongoing relationships, NDA on request for commissioned designs.

Can I bring in a sketch or do I need a CAD file?

Either — we offer Custom CAD as a service if you have the design in your head (or on paper) but not in software. Quoted per hour with a written estimate before work begins. Or send a finished STL/STEP and we'll go straight to printing. Most jewellers work in Rhino or Matrix; we accept native files from both.
