Architecture & Heritage 3D Printing

Scale models, planning submissions and Cotswolds heritage detail — from Oxford architecture practices to the Vale of White Horse.

Bicester3D works with architects, planning consultants and Cotswolds heritage practices. The day-to-day mix splits between site context for planning submissions, facade detail for design reviews, and reverse-engineered heritage parts. SLA resin for fine detail, FDM PLA for larger massing.

FEATURED PROJECT

Cotswolds heritage facade prints for planning submission

We routinely work with Cotswolds-area architecture and heritage practices producing 1:200 façade-detail prints for planning submissions — window mullions, stone-course detail and roofline accents that have to read at viewing distance. SLA grey resin where the surface finish matters, FDM PLA for the bulk site context.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

ARCHITECTURE & HERITAGE 3D PRINTING FAQ

What scale do you print architectural models at?

Most commonly 1:200 and 1:500 for site/context work, 1:100 for building massing, 1:50 for facade detail. SLA grey resin handles fine detail at any scale (window mullions, stone-course detail, mullions); FDM PLA is more economical for larger massing models. We can split larger sites across multiple prints with bondable join lines if it doesn't fit our 340×320×340mm FDM volume.

Can you produce models for planning submissions?

Yes — site context models, building massing models, and facade-detail prints regularly go through us for Cotswolds heritage submissions, Oxford planning panels, and South Oxfordshire / Vale of White Horse design reviews. SLA for finish-critical presentation pieces, FDM for the bulk site model.

What materials do architects use for model prints?

PLA is the architectural workhorse — cheap, easy to paint, available in white for clean presentation models. PETG when the model needs to travel or live in a sales suite for years. SLA grey resin for facade detail or any model where the material has to look injection-moulded out of the printer. We can advise on the right material at quote time once we see the geometry and end-use.

Can you produce site context / massing models?

Routinely — the site context model with building massing in white, terrain in a contrasting colour, and key landmarks identified. We work from your CAD model (Rhino, SketchUp, AutoCAD, Revit DXF/STL exports), or we can use OS or LiDAR data for the site terrain if you supply it. Cotswolds and Oxford architecture practices are regular customers.

Do you do model finishing — painting, mounting, signage?

We finish prints to the level needed for a clean presentation — wash, sand if necessary, prime, and paint to your spec. For complex finishing (custom signage, real materials, high-end basebording) we typically pass to specialist model-makers we work with regularly. Tell us what the model is for and we'll be honest about what's in scope vs better outsourced.
