Rapid Prototyping
From idea to physical part in days — most orders dispatched within 24 hours. Iteration-friendly pricing for product design, motorsport and startup teams.
Bicester3D's rapid prototyping service is built around the workflow product designers, engineers and startup teams actually use: send an STL or STEP, get a price in seconds, get the part fast — most orders dispatch within 24 hours — look at it, change the design, send the next version. We're set up for the iteration cadence — our standard turnaround is the same as our rapid turnaround, and there's no minimum order or setup fee on the next-version reprint. FDM in PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU and polycarbonate; SLA grey resin when surface finish has to look injection-moulded for stakeholder review. From £5 per part.
What rapid prototyping actually means here
Rapid prototyping is the loop between an idea and a part you can hold: export your CAD, print it, test it, change the design, print the next version. Everything about our service is built around making that loop as short and as cheap as possible. Quotes are instant — upload an STL or STEP file and the price is on screen in seconds, not in an email three days later. Most orders are dispatched within 24 hours, and there is no setup fee and no minimum order quantity, so reprinting a revised part costs exactly what the part costs.
FDM or SLA — matching the process to the prototype stage
Early concept and fit-check prototypes are almost always best in FDM: PLA for fast, cheap form studies from £5 a part, PETG or ABS once the part gets handled, clamped and dropped, TPU for gaskets and grips, and polycarbonate or carbon-fibre blends when the prototype has to survive real loads or under-bonnet temperatures. When the prototype's job is to look like the production part — stakeholder sign-off, photography, user testing of surface feel — SLA resin gives an injection-moulded-quality finish with crisp detail down to 25 micron layers.
You don't have to pick in advance: the quote tool prices both processes from the same file, so switching a design from FDM to SLA for the final presentation version is one click, not a new supplier conversation.
Tolerances, materials and what to expect
Standard FDM dimensional tolerance is ±0.2 mm, which is tight enough to verify clip fits, thread engagement and bearing seats on most consumer and industrial parts. Functional prototypes print in the same materials many production parts ship in — so a snap fit that survives in our PETG tells you something real about the moulded version. For enclosures we can print thread inserts seats, and SLA parts can be drilled, tapped, sanded and painted for presentation models.
The economics: why iterate with a UK print farm
A tooling change on an injection mould costs four figures and weeks. A design change here costs the price of the next print — usually £5 to £30 — and it's in your hands a day or two later with free tracked UK delivery. Teams typically run five to ten iterations before committing to tooling; at our pricing that whole programme often costs less than a single hour of mould-tool rework. When the design settles, the same files run as low-volume production on the same machines, bridging the gap while tooling is cut — or replacing it entirely for runs under a few thousand units.
How to get the fastest turnaround
Export STL or STEP in millimetres, upload it to the instant quote tool, and pick your material and layer height — the price and dispatch estimate update live. Multiple parts can go in one order (or one file), and every order is photographed and quality-checked before dispatch. If a part needs design work first, our CAD and reverse-engineering service can produce the model from a sketch, a sample part or a 3D scan.
CONCEPT TO PROTOTYPE
STL, OBJ, or 3MF files. Instant analysis.
Material, quality, quantity selection.
Most orders dispatched within 24 hours. Quality control on every part.
Collection or delivery. Test and iterate.
MATERIALS BY STAGE
Fastest and cheapest to print. Crisp detail for form studies and looks-like models. From £5 per part.
Tough and chemical resistant. Good for prototypes that get handled, dropped and tested hard.
Stable to around 95°C. Machinable and sandable for post-finishing. Enclosures and works-like parts.
Shore 95A. Gaskets, seals, grips and flexible joints.
WHAT A PROTOTYPE HAS TO PROVE
Does it look right in the hand? Cheap PLA prints answer this before you invest in detailed CAD.
Print mating parts and check clearances against real hardware rather than tolerances on a drawing.
Snap fits, threads, hinges and load paths, tested in a material close to production intent.
A physical part in someone's hand gets feedback a render never will.
Change the file, reprint. No setup fee and no minimum order on the next version.
Final checks on the design you're about to pay tooling money for.

RAPID PROTOTYPING FAQ
Standard turnaround is 2–3 working days from upload to dispatch — the same as our standard production work, because rapid prototyping IS our standard work. Same-day printing is available on request when machine capacity allows; contact the Bicester workshop in advance to arrange. The slowest part is usually courier delivery (typically 3–5 working days after dispatch) — if speed matters, free workshop collection skips the courier wait.
Depends on what you're testing. PLA for fit-check, form studies and visual reviews — cheapest, fastest, easiest to iterate. PETG when the prototype needs to flex or take real load. ABS or ASA for hot/outdoor environments. SLA grey resin when surface finish has to look injection-moulded for stakeholder review. Most prototyping projects start in PLA, then we switch material once the geometry's right — it's cheaper than committing to engineering material from iteration one.
Send the new file as a fresh quote — each version is a clean order with its own quote and price. We don't bundle iterations into a single job because (a) you control the cadence, (b) you only pay for what you actually print, (c) it keeps the audit trail clear. Most product designers we work with run 3–6 iterations of a part before committing to tooling. We're set up for that pattern.
Volume discounts kick in from 10+ identical parts in one order. Iterations of different geometry don't qualify (each is a different print). For longer-term prototyping relationships — say a product design team running multiple parallel projects — we can set up a trade account with negotiated rates and invoicing. Contact the workshop to discuss.
Yes, routinely. Most of our prototype work is for product design teams, motorsport engineers and startups where the geometry is commercially sensitive. Send your standard NDA before the upload and we'll sign before quoting. We don't share or store customer designs beyond what's needed to print and ship the order.
