PLA 3D PRINTING
PLA — polylactic acid — is the workhorse of professional FDM 3D printing. It prints cleanly, holds fine detail, and is dimensionally stable straight off the build plate. Bicester3D supplies custom PLA prints from a standard colour range, with most orders dispatched within 24 hours and ±0.2mm FDM tolerance. Upload an STL or STEP file for an instant quote — pricing starts at £5 per part, no minimum order, no setup fees.
WHEN PLA IS THE RIGHT MATERIAL
- Visual prototypes and fit-check models — the cheap, fast iteration loop product designers actually use.
- Display models, architectural massing, scale sculpture — fine detail holds at 0.1mm layer height.
- Educational and demo parts — repeatable, low-cost, easy to modify between print runs.
WHEN PLA IS THE WRONG MATERIAL
- Hot environments — PLA softens at 55°C, hot car cabins reach 70°C. Use ABS or ASA.
- Outdoor over months — UV degrades PLA visibly within a season. Use PETG or ASA.
- Continuous mechanical load — PLA snaps rather than flexes. Use PETG or polycarbonate.
FROM STL TO YOUR HAND
PLA is the easiest filament to print well, and the workflow reflects that — you can have parts in hand within 48 hours of upload.
PLA OR PETG?
These two cover roughly 80% of FDM jobs. The choice usually comes down to where the part lives and what it has to survive.
- ·Cleanest surface finish of any FDM material
- ·30+ standard colours, easy to paint
- ·Softens at 55°C — keep out of hot cars and direct sun
- ·Rigid but brittle — snaps rather than flexes under load
- ·Flexes before it breaks — handles real mechanical load
- ·Holds up outdoors and against chemical contact
- ·Dimensional accuracy similar to PLA, surface finish marginally less crisp
- ·The right call for any part that has to work, not just look right
Pick the right material for your part
PLA is our default for early prototypes and visual parts. Browse by use-case if you need outdoor durability, engineering function, or rubber-like flex instead.

WHAT WE PRINT IN PLA
Real examples from the workshop queue — a representative sample of last quarter's PLA projects:
- Product design prototypes for a Buckinghamshire consumer-electronics startup. Multi-iteration fit-check of enclosure parts, shipped on 2–3 day cadence.
- Architectural presentation models at 1:200 and 1:500 scales — terrain, building blocks, roofs, site context.
- Cosplay armour shell — a full-scale chest piece printed in six interlocking sections, finished with sanding and rattle-can primer.
- Educational anatomy teaching aids for a regional health trust — exploded-view vertebrae and joint replicas.
- Repeat-run parts for a model railway manufacturer — batched 20-part orders with consistent dimensional tolerance across the run.

PLA FAQ
PLA is rigid but brittle. It's fine for indoor fixtures, jigs and non-load-bearing parts, but it snaps under continuous mechanical stress and softens above 55°C. For functional or outdoor parts, choose PETG, ABS, ASA or nylon instead.
Not long-term. PLA degrades under UV light — parts visibly embrittle within a season of outdoor exposure. PETG and ASA are the outdoor-rated alternatives.
No. Even food-grade PLA resin loses food-safe status once printed, because the layer lines harbour bacteria and the print process is not sanitised. Bicester3D does not certify any FDM prints as food-safe.
PLA is available in our standard stock colour range. Specific shade matches or exotic finishes may incur a minimum order volume — contact the workshop to check availability before ordering.
Typical PLA lead time is 2–3 working days. Rush turnaround is available for trade accounts. Actual print time varies from 30 minutes for small parts to 18+ hours for maximum build volume.
